An introduction to the art of bespoke wedding stationery, where thoughtful design, beautiful craftsmanship and your unique story come together.

Your wedding invitations are so much more than a way to share the date and details of your celebration. They are the first glimpse into the occasion you are creating, setting the tone for everything that follows.

For couples who appreciate beautiful craftsmanship, considered details and something entirely their own, bespoke wedding invitations offer an opportunity to create stationery that feels deeply personal and truly one of a kind.

But what does commissioning bespoke wedding stationery actually involve? Do you need to have a particular design in mind? How much creative input is expected, and what happens once you've chosen your designer?

At Wish Upon A Calligraphy, we believe the experience should feel just as special as the finished pieces themselves. From our first conversation to the final handcrafted details, each stage is thoughtfully considered, allowing your vision to unfold into something beautiful.

Here, we take you through the bespoke design experience and everything you can expect along the way.

What Does Bespoke Wedding Stationery Really Mean?

Unlike semi-custom wedding invitations, which begin with an existing design that can be personalised, bespoke stationery is created entirely from the beginning, exclusively for your celebration.

There is no predetermined layout, colour palette or collection to work within. Instead, every element is thoughtfully developed around you and your partner and the wedding you envision, from the overall creative direction to the smallest finishing details.

This might include a custom illustration of your wedding venue, a beautifully hand-drawn monogram, an unexpected combination of fine-art printing techniques, or a distinctive invitation shape inspired by the architecture of your setting. The possibilities extend far beyond the invitation itself. Envelope liners, handmade papers, silk ribbons, wax seals and carefully considered accompanying cards can all become part of a cohesive design that reflect your day.

The result is not simply a collection of printed pieces, but a thoughtfully composed invitation suite that captures the atmosphere and individuality of your celebration.

1. The Initial Enquiry: Getting to Know Your Vision

Every bespoke commission begins with a conversation. Before any design work takes place, we take the time to understand your celebration, your preferences and the details that matter most to you. Perhaps you are planning an intimate gathering in the English countryside, a romantic château wedding in France, or a grand celebration in an Italian villa. Each setting brings its own character, and often provides a beautiful starting point for the creative direction.

During this initial stage, we explore details such as:

  • Your wedding date, venue and location.

  • The atmosphere and overall aesthetic you envision.

  • Your preferred colours, materials and finishing details.

  • The number of invitation suites required.

  • Your anticipated stationery investment and timeline.

You are always welcome to share a Pinterest board, photographs, fabric samples or any inspiration you have collected along the way. And if you don't have a clear design in mind, that is absolutely fine. Some of our favourite projects begin with little more than a feeling, a beautiful venue or a handful of words describing the atmosphere a couple wishes to create.

Our role as your designer is to interpret these ideas and translate them into something meaningful, cohesive and uniquely yours.

2. Your Bespoke Proposal: A Thoughtfully Considered Approach

Following our initial conversation, we prepare a personalised proposal outlining the scope of your stationery commission. This brings together the elements discussed, the proposed design and production approach, and the investment involved.

Depending on your requirements, your invitation suite may incorporate several individual pieces, including a main invitation, details card, RSVP card, envelopes and decorative finishing elements. We also consider the printing techniques, paper selections and embellishments that will best complement the overall aesthetic.

As every bespoke project is different, the final investment reflects the complexity of the design, the materials selected, the quantity required and the craftsmanship involved. Our bespoke wedding invitation commissions begin at £3,500, with each proposal tailored to the individual project. Once you are happy to proceed, your booking is secured with a retainer, and we begin the creative journey together.

3. Creative Direction: Bringing Your Ideas to Life

This is where the magic of bespoke design truly begins. With an understanding of your wedding and the atmosphere you wish to create, we begin developing the creative direction for your stationery.

We consider how the different elements might work together, exploring typography, composition, colour, illustration, paper textures and finishing techniques. Often, inspiration comes from the most unexpected places. The intricate details of a historic building might inspire a delicate embossed border. A garden filled with climbing roses could influence a hand-drawn illustration. The colours and textures of a particular landscape might become the foundation for an entire invitation suite. Rather than simply bringing together individual design elements, we look at the bigger picture, ensuring that each detail contributes to a cohesive and considered aesthetic.

You don't need to direct every creative decision. In fact, one of the most rewarding aspects of commissioning a bespoke designer is having the freedom to share your vision and allow someone with the experience, artistic understanding and technical knowledge to bring it to life.

Of course, your thoughts and preferences remain an important part of the process. We guide you through the creative journey, offering our recommendations while ensuring the finished design feels authentically yours.

4. The Design Development: Refining Every Detail

Once the creative direction has been established, we begin developing your invitation designs. This is where the initial ideas evolve into carefully considered compositions, bringing together the typography, illustrations, colours and decorative elements that will define your stationery.

You will be presented with digital design proofs, allowing you to see how your invitation suite is coming together. During this stage, you will have the opportunity to share your thoughts, request refinements and review the details before the designs are finalised.

We understand that your wedding invitations are an important part of your celebration, and our aim is to make the experience collaborative without becoming overwhelming. Rather than presenting you with endless decisions, we offer thoughtful creative guidance and carefully developed designs that reflect the vision we have established together. Every detail is considered, from the spacing of the typography to the balance of an illustration and the way individual pieces sit alongside one another.

Once you are completely happy with the designs, we move towards the final approval and production stages.

5. Paper, Printing and Finishing: The Beauty of Craftsmanship

One of the most beautiful aspects of bespoke wedding stationery is the opportunity to explore materials and traditional printing techniques that bring an additional layer of artistry to your invitations. While the design itself is incredibly important, the way a piece feels in your hands can be equally meaningful.

At Wish Upon A Calligraphy, we have a particular appreciation for tactile materials, delicate textures and the subtle imperfections that make handcrafted pieces so special. Depending on your chosen design, your stationery might incorporate:

Handmade cotton paper

Beautifully textured papers with soft, naturally irregular edges, offering a romantic, organic quality that is difficult to replicate with conventional materials.

Letterpress and blind debossing

Traditional techniques that create an impression within the paper, adding depth and a beautifully understated tactile finish.

Foil printing

A delicate metallic finish that can introduce a subtle sense of elegance, whether used for typography, monograms or intricate decorative details.

Handwritten calligraphy

The expressive beauty of pointed-pen calligraphy, where each handwritten detail carries its own character and individuality.

Wax seals and silk ribbons

Thoughtfully selected finishing touches that bring the individual elements of an invitation suite together.

Not every invitation requires an abundance of embellishments. Sometimes, the most beautiful designs are those that allow the quality of the paper, the typography and a single carefully chosen detail to speak for themselves.

The intention is always to create something harmonious, where each material and finishing technique has been selected with purpose.

6. Production: From Design to Something Tangible

Once your designs have been carefully reviewed and approved, we begin bringing them into the physical world.

Depending on the techniques involved, this may include specialist printing, hand-finishing, calligraphy, carefully assembling individual components and preparing the invitation suites for delivery.

This stage requires patience and attention to detail, particularly when working with delicate handmade papers, traditional printing techniques and individually finished elements.

Each piece is handled with care, ensuring that the final stationery reflects the original creative vision. For us, this is one of the most rewarding moments in the entire process: seeing something that began as an idea become a tangible piece of art.

7. The Final Details: Preparing Your Invitations for Their Journey

As production comes to an end, we carefully prepare your stationery for its journey to you. If your commission includes envelope addressing, wax seals, ribbons or other finishing elements, these are incorporated according to the agreed specifications. Your invitations are then carefully packaged for delivery.

Whether your celebration is taking place in the United Kingdom or overseas, we work with couples internationally, creating stationery for weddings across Canada, USA, Europe and beyond. We recommend allowing approximately 6 to 8 weeks for the invitation design and production process, although more intricate bespoke commissions may require additional time. If you are considering bespoke invitations, getting in touch early allows us to explore the possibilities without unnecessary time constraints.

Why Choose a Bespoke Wedding Invitation Designer?

There is something particularly special about commissioning a piece of design that has been created exclusively for you. Beyond the beauty of the finished stationery, you are investing in the experience, creative expertise and craftsmanship that bring it to life.

A bespoke designer considers not only what your invitations will look like, but how they will feel, how each element relates to the next, and how the overall composition reflects the character of your celebration. It is an opportunity to step away from predetermined designs and create something with a deeper sense of meaning. And perhaps most importantly, it allows you to enjoy the creative process without needing to make every design decision yourself. By entrusting your vision to an experienced designer, you can be part of the journey while allowing the artistic details to unfold naturally.

An Invitation to Create Something Entirely Your Own

At Wish Upon A Calligraphy, we approach every bespoke commission with the belief that beautiful stationery should be personal, thoughtfully considered and created to be treasured long after the celebration has passed.

Our work is inspired by traditional craftsmanship, fine-art design and the quiet beauty of carefully chosen details.

Whether you have a clear vision for your wedding invitations or are simply drawn to a particular feeling or aesthetic, we would be delighted to explore what we could create together.

Your story is entirely your own. Your stationery should be, too.
